5 TIPS FOR IMPROVING RETENTION AND OUTCOMES THROUGH IMPROVED COACHING AND TUTORING
By Melvin Hines on November 13, 2014

Most Schools Offer Tutoring and Other Support Services.  Here’s a few Ideas for Taking Them up a Level.

According to this article by Hines, “education technology is creating new ways to increase higher education retention.”  This is being addressed due to 80% of dropouts of college students due to their bad experiences during their freshman year.

In this article, Upswing presents five tips that would be beneficial in increasing a student retention by having that student engaged in the process of selecting a tutor or coach.

  •   Allow the students to have a choice and take part choosing their mentors or coach.
  •  Get to know your students and try to introduce them to a mentor they can relate to or have similar interest.

  • Work with the students’ schedule and try to provide tutoring sessions will accommodate them due to their work schedules.  Tutoring sessions may need to be after 6 pm.

  • Have students work with peer tutors to see how other students struggle and to see where they are coming from.

  •   Let students know their voice counts by collecting feedback.

In my classroom experience, I find that other students can reach a student because they understand where they’re coming from.  These 5 tips would be beneficial to any classroom teacher.  I plan to follow these tips by collecting more feedback from my students.
