Adaptive
Technology/Resident Care
Hart
and Roe (June, 2013). Volume 24, Number 2.
This
article is based on using adaptive technology for older people in assistant
living facilities or Nursing homes. Hart
and Roe (2013) decided how they could provide an outlet to connect their
elderly residents with the outside world.
Adaptive Technology was what these residents needed to make this
happen. “Adaptive Technology covers
items that are specifically designed for persons with disabilities and would
seldom be used by non-disabled persons.”
The care staff of the Sherbrooke Centre in Saskatoon Saskatchewan set
out to ‘make a difference’ for the elderly at their Centre and give them a
better quality of life.
The
decision was to provide computers for their residents to use. No matter how disabled a resident was, a
computer was designed to accommodate their disability. Computers would allow
them to communicate with their love ones, go shopping on line, keep up with
news in the outside world; as well as talk to their family and friends using
Skype, view pictures of family and play games. The care staff seek help from
the community on providing computers and training for their residents.
The
project was a success and the care staff found that enhancing their residents’
technological abilities caused the residents to live fuller lives. I could not imagine not having a computer in
my home.
