Services. Here’s a few Ideas for Taking
Them up a Level.
According to this article by Hines, “education
technology is creating new ways to increase higher education retention.” This is being addressed due to 80% of dropouts
of college students due to their bad experiences during their freshman year.
In this article, Upswing presents five tips that
would be beneficial in increasing a student retention by having that student
engaged in the process of selecting a tutor or coach.
- Allow the students to have a choice and take part choosing their mentors or coach.
- Get to know your students and try to introduce them to a mentor they can relate to or have similar interest.
- Work with the students’ schedule and try to provide tutoring sessions will accommodate them due to their work schedules. Tutoring sessions may need to be after 6 pm.
- Have students work with peer tutors to see how other students struggle and to see where they are coming from.
- Let students know their voice counts by collecting feedback.
In my classroom experience, I find that other
students can reach a student because they understand where they’re coming
from. These 5 tips
would be beneficial to any classroom teacher. I plan to follow these tips by collecting more feedback from my students.
While we have a very small population at our school, we have been discussing a mentor program for years. Our biggest problem is finding the older students willing to help out and mentor the younger ones.

Giving students a voice is really powerful lesson teaching students that things don't have to be the way they are. That they can choose to change things.
